The Verdict: Convergence Rather Than Replacement

The Technical Reality of Blockchain Names
The distinction that matters most is rarely stated plainly: blockchain naming systems are not part of the DNS. A .eth or comparable blockchain name does not exist in the root zone, and no ordinary recursive resolver can resolve it.
Reaching one requires a browser with native support, an extension, or a centralised gateway that resolves on the visitor's behalf. That last option is the one most commonly used in practice — and it reintroduces exactly the central point of failure the technology was meant to remove.
The practical consequence is straightforward: a blockchain name cannot currently serve a general-audience website, cannot receive standard email, and cannot be issued a publicly trusted TLS certificate. For an audience of crypto-native users it works. For everyone else, the address simply does not resolve.
